MUERTE: The Art of Lizz Lopez

Opening Night
Saturday August 25th
7PM-10PM

DJs
ART of COOP
Jpeg ZeroOne

Lethal Amounts Gallery
1226 W 7th St.

About the Artist:

Born the daughter of a Southern Baptist minister, Lizz Lopez experienced a curious and restricted childhood in San Antonio, Texas. Since her exposure to secular activities was limited, she pored over medical books and encyclopedias provided by her mother and with the help of her brothers, gained a culture of music, snuck comic books, drug store magazines such as Muerte and Alarma, and books by Stephen King. Obsessed with images of death, botany, physical anomalies, disease and mortality, she wrote and illustrated her own horror stories.

Inspired by the vulnerability and fragility of the human body and her own obsession with life and death, Lizz pursued a career in the medical field, attending the University of the Incarnate Word under the tutelage of nuns. She worked as a registered nurse but soon escaped to San Francisco and attended the San Francisco Art Institute, earning an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in classical oil painting. After the dot com bust, Lizz moved to Los Angeles to make movie posters for Sony and Lionsgate. She continued to paint as well as manage pain in terminally ill patients and spent multiple years as a cardiothoracic ICU nurse. Eventually, she returned to the university and earned a master’s degree in anesthesia. When she is not putting patients to sleep, she is creating art.

Lizz currently works mostly with graphite, enjoying the stark contrast she can achieve with the medium, focusing on the precision of complex structures such as lace and bones. She has exhibited and been published internationally. Her work is featured in a line of clothing by Sullen apparel and her designs have been embraced by multiple major rock bands further ensconcing her work in the world of contemporary art.

Hercules & Love Affair present a new live show, as Andy Butler celebrates ten years of touring, and makes a long-awaited return to North America to support the critically acclaimed ‘Omnion’ album. Hercules has always been a collaborative project that’s evolved and renewed, and the new live show continues the same exciting path.

Andy Butler explains: “The new Hercules show consists of myself and Alec Storey from the project Second Storey presenting songs from my 10 year catalogue in a wholly new and reinvigorated way. The vocal component of the show will come from the original vocalist's performances and use material from recording sessions through the years. The recorded vocals might be manipulated, or feature previously unheard takes or vamps from the sessions. It will allow the show to be quite dynamic. Now with the freedom to manipulate all aspects of the show sonically, I will be able to veer into territory from my back catalogue that felt harder to explore previously. There will be a new live visual presentation as well, conceived and executed by myself and Joie Iacono under our Hoarder A/V project. I’m looking forward to sharing it with you in September.”

Afsari often combines her love of music and film to create intense and fascinating dreamscapes for her subjects to explore.

She photographed St. Vincent for her album “Masseduction”, works closely with the record label Dais and was featured by Playboy magazine who described her work as a celebration of “the space between fetish and fragility”.

Her first solo exhibit opened on July 7th, 2018 at Lethal Amounts Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. We are celebrating her successful first show with a closing ceremony on Saturday, July 21st.
